May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month
This May, we’re bringing the shade. When you grab a hat, you’re not just protecting yourself from the sun, you’re also helping support life-saving research, education, and support for those affected by skin cancer.
For every purchase made in May, Hemlock is donating 5% of all website profits to the American Cancer Society®*.
The American Cancer Society® does not endorse any service or product.
Why We Throw Shade
Sun protection has always been at the core of what we do. This fight touches nearly everyone, which is why we partner with the American Cancer Society each May — to raise awareness, support research, and encourage simple habits that help protect the skin you’re in.
- Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S.
- 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime
- The face, ears, scalp and neck are the most common areas affected
- When caught early, most skin cancers are highly treatable
What to Look For
Know Your Spots
Getting familiar with your skin and staying consistent with dermatologist visits is one of the best ways to catch changes early.
Skin cancer most frequently appears on areas with the most sun exposure, like the face, ears, scalp, neck, back, chest, arms, and hands. While many skin cancers develop in these high-exposure areas, melanoma can appear anywhere on the body.
- New, changing, or just doesn’t look right? Pay attention.
- Use the ABCDE rule as a quick check.
- When in doubt, get it checked by a dermatologist.
Sun Safety 101
UV rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes, even on cloudy days. That’s why daily protection matters.
How to Stay Protected:
- Cover Up: Wear wide-brim hats & UPF fabrics
- Seek Shade: When the sun is strongest (10am–4pm)
- SPF + Reapply: Use SPF 30+ sunscreen & reapply every 2 hours
- Protect Your Eyes: Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA + UVB rays
- Be Altitude Aware: The higher you go, the stronger the UV
- Cloudy Days + Any Season: You’re still getting UV exposure
