What is the Sun Wise Campaign?
The Sun Wise campaign is our active effort to raise awareness, educate and become a united voice on ways to stay safe from the damaging effects of the sun.
As you may know, there are over 5.4 million new cases of skin cancer diagnosed each year. This means that every year there are more new cases of skin cancer than breast, prostate, lung and colon cancer combined. Our goal with the Sun Wise campaign is to incite change and move these numbers in a positive direction.
Identifying ourselves as “Sun-thusiasts,” or those who have spent a better portion of their lives living and loving the sun, we have long awaited an industry-movement that educates and offers solutions and preventative measures from the harmful effects of the sun.
We feel that now, with social media being at the cultural forefront of connecting company to consumer, is the best time to bring fresh, fun and informative solutions to sun safety.
Help us encourage and demonstrate the importance of sun safety and let’s become sun wise forever.
Sun damage at a glance
As most of us know, excessive UV radiation from the sun can cause severe skin damage and is the leading cause of skin cancer and melanoma. The sunlight that reaches our skin is made up of two types of harmful UV rays: UVA (longwave ultraviolet rays) and UVB (short wave ultraviolet rays).
UVA rays, which are 30-50 times more prevalent than UVB rays, have long been known to play a big part in skin aging, dark spots, and wrinkling (photo aging). Though UVA rays are the desired “tanning” ray, it is known to contribute to and may even initiate the early stages of skin cancer.
UVB rays, the chief cause of redness and sun burn, attack the skin’s more superficial epidermal (skin surface) layers and are the key factor in the development of skin cancer and melanoma. Though intensity varies by season, location and time of day, without protection, UVB rays can burn and damage your skin year-round.
